COMBATING CORRUPTION & PROMOTING GOOD GOVERNMENT
Dean has served as Chair of the Government Audit and Oversight (GAO) Committee since January 2021 and has championed departmental oversight and good government reforms that have saved the city millions of dollars, promoted independence of commissions, and delivered improved services to constituents. He’s stood up to corruption and abuses of power, exercising independent and bold leadership.
Commissioned eight audits of programs and departments, including street teams, homeless services, SFPD overtime, and affordable housing funding
Created independent anti-corruption unit at the Budget and Legislative Analyst
Held dozens of hearings to provide transparency and oversight into the operations of City government, including delivery of services, administration of funds, program management, and breaches of public trust
Passed legislation to protect the independence of City commissioners in the wake of the Mayor’s “resignation-gate” scandal
Wrote and passed “Up the Vote” ballot measure to double voter participation in Mayoral races; the measure also saved the City $7 million by avoiding an unnecessary low-turnout election in 2023
